New York has long been hailed for its sweeping, dynamic, and powerful skyscrapers. Yet, there is so much more that contributes to the city’s architectural brilliance. Set like gems among New York’s towering columns are luxurious apartment houses and hotels built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries at a time when elegance reigned supreme. Emery Roth (1871-1948), one of New York’s most renowned architects is largely responsible for these spectacular features of the cityscape.
Born in 1871 in Hungary, Roth was the son of an Inn Keeper and brother to eight children. When his father died, the family fell on hard times and it was determined that young Emery would travel to America to seek his fortune in the land of opportunity.
Ambition and resourcefulness led him to an apprenticeship in an architectural firm where he realized his passion. Roth’s great potential was highly recognized and he was hired onto the architectural staff of the World’s Columbia Exposition
